Benefits Of Dance
Dance is an art form that can promote many attributes and skills for life. Dance combines the mind, body and spirit to create expression and physical grace. Rarely can an activity provide as many benefits as dance. Here are some of the most beneficial:
Children need an outlet for their energy not mention enough physical activity to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Dance provides students time every week to exercise and gives them a full understanding of coordination and muscle isolation. Posture is also an important part of dance helping all students carry themselves in a way that will create strength.
Grace, confidence and responsibility are three life skills dance students foster in dance class, giving them a sense of independence and importance. Accomplishing a set of movements or perfecting a turn allows students to feel success and create confidence while building grace through movement. Each student, no matter the age, is responsible for their actions and accomplishments in class promoting a sense of responsibility towards ones self.
Although dancers work independently on their own set of skills and successes they still learn in a group setting and are often asked to perform as a group. The students in a group always become attached to each other and create strong friendship bonds. These connections last a life time since the children have a common interest. They also have a strong sense of determination and can guide each other through the teenage years with a focus and a sense of a family of friends.
Most children have an amazing imagination which, if nurtured, can create some of the most innovative ideas of the next generation. In class a young dancer can become anything their heart desires. Encouraging imagination prepares students for character roles as well as expressive works that may be called upon in any activity or occupation when they are older.
Achievement in dance is fostered through a strong class structure providing students a secure understanding of how to work with focus and determination and to follow a dream. This structure encourages students to learn about their abilities and work within a system to reach their goals.
Music is a large part of dance! Listening to music and connecting it with movement creates certain synapses in the brain which strengthens a students abilities to create, imagine and express everything. Music is proven to enhance a child's ability to learn anything.
Future opportunities for children who study dance can vary extremely. If a student is going to follow dance after graduating high school there are many options ranging from university dance or choreography degrees, masters and doctorates, to dance programs through companies and graduate institutions, dance notation, set or lighting design, dance society syllabus creation or examiners. The sky is the limit.
